I've had Indy in basic obedience for the past month at Petsmart. He's done well with most everything, if he weren't so excited all the time, I'm sure he'd do better.

I've been working on the blocks that Catharina posted a few months ago, and have been working a lot on downs for long periods of time. Last night was the first time we tried sit/stay and down stay. Most of the owners couldn't even get their dogs to stay. I put Indy in sit/stay droped the leash and walked 10 feet away and came back. Then I put him in a down/stay and walked all the way down the aisle, cut up a few aisles and made a huge circle around. As I came back around the aisle and could see him again, there he was, laying right where I left him. The expression on the teacher's face was classic! I don't think she thought Indy was capable of such control! What a good boy!!!!

Goooooo Indy!!!!!

If you ever plan on doing anything like agility, that down/stay will be a huge asset. Buster is the only one in my agility class with a decent stay (his is a sit/stay, though) and it sure does make it nice to be able to walk a short course without having to either crate, tether, or bring him with me.

Bet the instructor wonders why you're even in class with Indy obeying so well. :-) That's so impressive!

Yeah for Indy! What a great feeling hah?

I took Synder to obedience at Petsmart and I will never forget my first class. I never thought Synder would make it out of basic obedience (neither did the teacher). The last day of class Synder got an award for "most improved dog". I was so proud of her so I know what you are feeling!

Congrats to both. Keep up the good work

Congratulations! Buckley also got he "Most approved" award in basic obedience too. We're in intermediate now and practicing exercises for the CGC. At times, he acts like he's forgotten everything he's learned so far. Good luck with him; he'll do you proud!

I bet in every class, if there is a Britt in it, it will have the best chance of getting most improved just because they are so hyper at the start. My pups have often brought chaos to obedience classes in Petsmart while never being a part of them. I can see in their faces that they sure hope I'm not there to sign up for the class. :D I even had a trainer come up to me while I was shopping with them, and this was after my oldest was a year old, and he said, "They aren't quite ready for obedience classes yet." It's not that they are bad, just always excited to see everybody.

Must be a Britt thing cause Cricket also won the "Most Improved" award at obedience class! She wasn't hyper - she didn't like the other dogs, even another NBRAN Britt (very embarrassing!). Lots of liver treats and "watch me" when another dog got close did wonders.

Heck, I'd run away from that trainer as fast as I could ... it's like an Emergency Medical professional responding to a 911 chest pain call & saying "Your heart attack isn't severe enough for treatment."
