Arthritis and Glucosamin

Postby Cindy » Thu Jun 13, 2013 3:25 pm

We were noticing that Kayla was having a little trouble climbing all the steps at my brother's house at the beach. Sometimes her back legs just didn't quite hit the stairs right and she stumbled a bit. We also noticed a hesitancy in wanting to go up and down all the steps more than necessary. The vet said she had some arthritis in her back so I guess it's time to start her on "something."

What do you recommend, how much, and how often??

One of my prior adopted Brittanys had arthritis, so I started using a product called Nupro Joint Support, following the dosage instructions on the product which is only about 1/2 a scoop a day for my dogs. It is a powder that is sprinkled on food. I feed kibble, so I add water and the powder and it makes a nice gravy that the dogs love. My old boy did so well on it I have used it for every dog since, including senior fosters. Since I add it as a supplement all the time I can't say if the dogs are better off, but my dogs have never acted arthritic even when xrays revealed significant arthritis. Here's a link to the product: http://www.nuprostore.com/nuprojointsup.htm

We have Sammie on Zuke's Hip. One a day with her incontinence meds.
She is 16 and still runs a few miles a day.
We got her when she was 10 and after even a little exercise she would limp for 2 days. After about 2 months on Zukes, she stopped limping and began running.

I have been using Dasuquin with MSM for Ranger and recently tried another product and noticed a huge difference so he is back on the Dasuquin with MSM and I buy it on Amazon

I get Zuke's hip at either Cenex (farm supply) or REI. It is a no grain beef or peanut butter square.
We also use Zuke's energy bars for dogs. She loves them and they work.

Interesting - this is what my vet just recommended. Think I'll give it a try and see if it works. Thanks.

the zukes hip treats can be found at most pet stores and pet boutiques. some feed stores around my house carry the line, you might have to ask to order that particular flavor though
