Is 1-2-3 Flea Tick Repellent Safe for Cats

Postby rtropeano » Sun Jul 26, 2009 1:02 pm

Does anyone know if the 123- tick repellent (Barb posted) is safe for cats too ? I have an older boy who likes to sit outside in an enclosure but I don't want to use commercial products on him anymore.

Thanks,
Rose

Rose, the only herbal concoctions that should not be used on cats are those made using undiluted essential oils. The essential oils of herbs are products that have very high concentrations of the oils inherent in many herbs, and almost always are used "diluted" by a carrier oil....a common dilution would be 10 drops of essential oil to 1-2 ounces of carrier oil. But still, these are NOT recommended for cats. Fresh herbs or dried herbs used in quantities recommended are almost always safe....if you are planning on using any herb in a home-made concoction it is best to research those herbs for contraindications. Rosemary is contraindicated in animals that are pregnant or seizure prone. Herbs that can substituted for Rosemary are Mint (family), Lavender, Lemongrass, or Rose Geranium.

Here is a good site listing what herbs are okay and what herbs are not okay for cats:

Barb, that definitely helps, the whole "essential oil" thing was really confusing me.
Thanks,
