FAST Q

Postby Alifaire » Fri Jul 17, 2009 7:12 pm

We trialed today and got our 2nd Q in FAST (AKC's Fifteen and Send Time)! It was a beautiful run and we finished 2nd! :D

The Standard and Jumpers courses were NQs because I'm neither as skilled nor as fast as my dog :( But after every run I get to see what no one sees - a beautiful, happy, smiling, Brittany face ready to run again!

In our last run, which was a total wreck [at one point Victor was barking at me in frustration after I ran into a jump  ] we, well, he had a few seconds of brillance. The course ended with a long line of 4 jumps in a row. It's where the handler is supposed to run like the wind to cue the dog to each jump. Not happening in my case, so I was left with one command - 'GO ON!' at the first of 4 jumps. By the time I was running past the second jump, Victor was sailing over the last jump! WOO HOO - what a pretty sight. :D And then Victor stops after the finish and waits for me to catch up. His happy face and wagging tail cheering me on.

Gosh, I love my dog!!!

Thanks so much! We trial in another month, so maybe I can be a better handler by then. I so appreciate the support from this group. The people are as great as the Brittany breed.

Woohoo!!! Congrats on the FAST Q.

Isn't "go on" a wonderful command?! Buster and I are big fans of that one too

It's a command we began using in an emergency situation - Victor was way ahead of me one time and I reacted hoping to avoid a refusal call. Victor did 'go on' and we've been using it ever since. I try not to get so far behind that I need it but...

Thanks for the support! Hope to hear about Buster's success too!

I just love hearing about these agility dogs. I enjoyed the intro class I took but poor Kayla ... it just didn't have enough "action" for her. She got bored pretty quickly and couldn't understand why the other (slower) dogs had to keep practicing. Once she did something on the course she was ready to move on. Her motto was "Who needs repetition?? "

Mostly fun - sometimes just funny! I have certainly learned to keep my sense of humor. Our motto is "If it ain't fun - why run?"

How did you get started in agility? I think it's something Emma would really enjoy and be good at.

How did we get started? A friend had a friend who was in agility. My friend thought her Min Pin would be good at it and thought it would also be a good outlet for Victor's energy. We are very fortunate to have a great training center just 12 miles away. My friend told the owner I was interested in beginning agility also. My friend began training with the owner, and I started with another instructor.

I went to the first class in Feb. of 07 and told the instructor that I could spell agility - that was all my dog and I could do. So, don't feel you need a lot experience in obedience to start agility. A great sense of humor and willingness to do the homework is about all you need in addition to a training facility.

Hope you get involved in agility. Even if you don't want to compete, the bond Victor and I have is so much stronger now from the agility experience that I strongly recommend the training for anyone. :D

And now another FAST Q leg and the title of Novice FAST!!!!! :D

We competed in Cleveland today and had a beautiful run on this course. Victor is running so well that we also took 3rd in the class. Not something I expected in a larger trial.

One other Brittany was at the trial and we cheered for each other and high-fived after each qualifying run - all because we share the love of our Brittanys!
