Re: 13 year old recovering from pneumonia

Thanks, Cindy and Lisa! Dilsey may not have too long before she moves on to the rainbow bridge, but she is enjoying life, and today we saw on her X rays that the fluid from the pneumonia is going down (of course, we also learned that her heart is contributing fluid too--two steps forward, two steps ...

13 year old recovering from pneumonia

It's been a really long time since I've written on here--we have two senior Brittanys: our loving rescued guy, Hudson (who was "Buddy" and was fostered by DelawareBritts six years ago--he has an amazing story, but that's for some other time), and our spunky almost-14-year-old Dilsey, who we've had s...

Re: Letters from Hudson #2

Thanks, everyone, for the comments on Hudson! I'm no good at posting photos (still, and despite instructions) and I'm so glad Hudson's foster mama is. We had a great trip to Maine. Our older Britt, Dilsey (the one with white shaker, if you've been reading the medical posts), stayed with Grandma (my ...

Re: strange symptoms, mysterious condition

We're not sure yet how long the neurologist will keep her on prednisone--whether for the rest of her life (I hope not, given the side effects) or just for another month or so. We have another appointment with him in two weeks when he'll assess her improvement and let us know about the future. I'll p...

Re: strange symptoms, mysterious condition

Another update! The diagnosis of white shaker has been confirmed by Dilsey's amazing response to the dose of prednisone that the neurologist prescribed. She is no longer shaky at all. Her balance has returned in full. In other words, she is the dog that she was before these symptoms began! We're so ...

Re: strange symptoms, mysterious condition

P.S. Dakota--Dr. Glass did get right down on the floor with Dilsey, just like you said! He was great. She gave him several Brittany smiles :D (she's a compulsive smiler with anyone she sees a friend) and we had to assure him that she wasn't about to bite... Apparently a Dalmation had given a similar...

Re: strange symptoms, mysterious condition

An update: We visited the neurologist at RedBank Veterinary Hospital yesterday. Dilsey had a thorough examination. We brought her medical records and past X rays, bloodwork also. The neurologist saw two possibilities (ruled out the others that we'd considered possibilities): -White Shaker Syndrome (...

Re: strange symptoms, mysterious condition

Here is an update. Dilsey continues to lurch left and to cross one foot over the other when walking, often stumbling a little (kind of as if she is drunk). She shakes, especially in the head, except when she is resting against something, like the floor or her bed. Otherwise, she seems okay--she is s...

Re: strange symptoms, mysterious condition

Thanks for asking about Dilsey. She seems not to be in any pain, eats normally (that is, with gusto!), and goes about all of her usual activities with interest (sniffing everything, begging, sometimes even inviting Hudson, our other Brittany, to play). But she is still a little off balance and her h...

Re: Study: spinocerebellar degeneration in Brittanys

Thanks so much for your reply. I think you're exactly right, that my husband and I need to be patient and keep observing Dilsey's symptoms, trying not to jump to conclusions... in our desire to be certain of a diagnosis as soon as possible,we could easily be led to the wrong conclusion (a very frigh...

Re: strange symptoms, mysterious condition

Thanks so much for these responses--each of you is such a help. We're going to talk with our vet about the possibility of vestibular disease--Dilsey's balance continues to be quite bad (she usually veers left, bumping against door frames as she passes through, etc.). She's now taking Rimadyl for it ...

Study: spinocerebellar degeneration in Brittanys

Apparently, spinocerebellar degeneration has been identified as genetic in Brittanys, and can begin between the ages of 7 and 14. Has anyone known an older Brittany with this condition? Here is the medical study of eight Brittanys with the disease, which I've been reading and trying to decode this a...

strange symptoms, mysterious condition

Hi there, The older of our two Brittanys, our nine and a half year old (Dilsey), has developed some symptoms that are making us nervous. We've taken her to the vet twice and have been speaking to our vet over the phone a great deal (we're waiting another call, as she's doing research into these cont...

So cute!

Your dogs look so happy at the beach. Trey Louie is looking tall and handsome since I last saw him. He has that great teenage look--very slim and long legged. What a great swimmer, too! Hudson likes to lie down in water with his head sticking up (never seen any dog but him do that) or he wades, whic...
