Re: Older Dog Behavior/Feeding Questions
Our 17 year old exhibited the same confusion and problems in the yard and was diagnosed with Canine Dementia (cognitive dysfunction). I believe you are on the right track with blocking off part of the yard, that way he still has access to the familiar but lessons the chance of the overheating. I had...

Re: PAUL surgery
He has seen three vets since January--all three recommended the arthroscopy. The x-rays were also sent down to Seattle to a specialist who suggested the same thing. The last vet is only one of two who can perform the PAUL surgery in Washington state, but we will need to go to BC for it. Luckily, sin...

PAUL surgery
Our just over 1 year old Britany has been diagnosed with elbow dysplasia (right front). Doctor does not know if it is congenital or due to injury, but that is beside the point. Recommendation is Proximal Abducting Ulnar Osteotomy (PAUL) surgery, or at least an arthroscopy to clean out the area. Base...
Re: Dog chews
We have had good luck with Himalayan Cheese, expensive but lasts quite a while. I also buy the 3' Bully Stick and cut it down into 5" pieces, those seem to be great for teeth as well. I cut up my own antlers when I find them or friends give them to me, not sure if they last any longer than the chees...

Re: Older Dog/Accidents
We had a 17 year old with the canine dementia (cognitive disorder). She got lost in the corners, forgot to go outside, etc. What I did was make her stay outside until she did what she was supposed to, either #1 or #2 and while she still had accidents, it was not #2. As it got worse, she began to run...

Re: Maggie's CCL tear and muscle mass
When it rains, it pours, it seems, especially dealing with dogs as they get older. St. Rocco is the intercessor for dogs, Prayer to Saint Rocco O Great St. Rocco, deliver us, we beseech thee, from the scourges of God; through thy Intercessory, preserve our bodies from contagious diseases, and our so...

Puppy Teeth
Just took my 9 week old brittany (Rusty) in for his first vet visit. He is healthy but the vet told me his is missing 2 deciduous pre-molars. My own research showed this was a p2 on the bottom, each side (p1 do not come in until adult teeth). Is this something I should be concerned with? He can stil...

Re: Torn paws, won't walk
We did the vet wrap, but I will look up the gel and put it in my ever increasing dog first aid kit. THanks for the tip.

Re: Torn paws, won't walk
YEah, it was a first for us. For now on, we do a paw check when sitting. He is walking and getting up on his own today, so I feel better and obviously he does too. Finally went to the bathroom on his own as well!! After talking with his owner last night, I discovered he is also a drama queen. So he ...

Re: Torn paws, won't walk
Well, we buckled under his puppy eyes and brought him to the vet tonight--but not before trying "second skin", spray analgesic, and Tramadol. After being coddled and wrapped, he finally walked on his own! YAY. At least now we know it was the feet and not anything else--A $300 piece of mind I guess.

Torn paws, won't walk
Well, we are dog sitting and thought a little hike would be good for this overweight behemoth. He went up fine, then about 1/4 of the way down, refused to go any further. Long story short, two other groups and I ended up carrying his 80 lbs the last 1+ miles. After getting him to the car, we saw the...

Re: Shep and his Renal Failure
Isn't great that dogs don't know what is going on with them? They live day to day, with no though on tomorrow. Something we should learn.
