Re: Catching Birds!

What do the finches eat from the feeder? sunflower seeds?

Any chance you could just fling a couple suet-cakes on your roof, inaccessable to the dogs? :-)

Re: Catching Birds!

I would have thought that, at that height, your finches would be relatively safe given ordinary finchy precautions. There is an awful lot of space between your dogs nose and the finch in the pic. This would suggest Barb's natural solution.

Beautiful gold finch! I can see why you're so concerned.

Re: Catching Birds!

I wish you could see our feeder - Picture!! Picture!!! it has a dome on top to keep the squirrels away and also from them leaping to it from the nearest tree. It has this gigantic steel baffle on the pole to keep the racoons away (we saw a family climbing on each others backs to try and reach over ...

Re: Catching Birds!

A really long shepherds hook and a ladder in the short term? In the long run you might want to consider mixing/pouring some concrete to form a platform for a flagpole or similar structure?

Shouldn't be too difficult, and should provide protection from tomcats as well as dogs.

Re: Catching Birds! - AGAIN!!

... Is it time to bring in the feeder? If so, what will stop her come winter when we really do need to feed the birds? Does anyone think the e-collar might work???? I hate to use it for discipline purposes when she's done so well wearing it off leash. I wouldn't want her to get confused but I AM MA...

And so did I, until I read about various little "kill" incidents in this forum, after which I viewed "point only" as a learned trait in some Brits.

Re: Catching Birds!

It's really a tricky one if you sorta cherish the birdies. Mine would go thru all the motions of pursuit, but not actually catch any of 'em.

There's the obvious stuff: Can you position the feeder outside the fence (if any)? Outside the yard? Leave the dog in until the birds are thru eating? Etc.

Re: Lola and Tramp, Lola is being hateful

They're "playing nice" in several key circumstances. I'd take that as the key. Consider downplaying the contentious circumstances. Be generally affectionate with both, but tend to respond to neither when contentious. They're OK in certain circumstances, I don't see why they can't sort the rest out f...

Re: Changes

I was really sorry to hear of the loss of your Cassie. Her years roughly paralleled those of my Little Fox, who passed at 15 1/2 last Nov. And, yes, she was an only dog, and I was totally unprepared for her loss. Was in shock for months, eventually changed much of my daily, weekly etc schedule, whic...

Re: I feel bad about a stray dog.

I respect what you are doing and commend you, but, like Auntiemom, think your best bet is to find a "stray rescue" group with hands-on experience in your area, if one exists.

Re: Screw Ball

I heeded your advice and took her to Petsmart. She broke away, slipped her collar, and was missing for near 24 hours. "A very manageable pooch!" Oh goodness!!!! Perhaps a slip lead next time. Crazy pup. Just 'cuz she's socialized with dogs and can hang out with them, doesn't mean she's had lots of ...
