Re: Males better at being a watch dog?
My Cooper barks when the foxes "bark" at night. Other than that, he really doesn't bark much. On the other hand, my female Beagle/Brit mix is quite a barker and will join Cooper if he barks even if she doesn't know what she is barking at

She's beautiful! I'm sure you will have her trained in no time.
Re: Changes
My sincere condolences. I too will miss the Cassie stories. She had a good life.

Re: Pippa and her pile of toys
Love the freckles on Pippa's face (miss that -- my first Brit, Max, had lots of freckles). My Cooper does the same thing with his favorite stuffed toys -- but I think he is just making sure that Belle doesn't get them

Re: Brittany shedding...honestly--how much?
Interesting question. I think my Beagle/Brit mix sheds more than my Brittany, but her fur is coarser and maybe it just sticks to my clothes more easily. I wouldn't say either of the two Brits that I have owned shed excessively, but we definitely wear fur to work at times (nothing a good lint roller ...

Re: Male or female?
I have only had male Brits, both rescues. I just ended up with males, not because of any preference, but because something about those dogs drew me to them. They have both been sweet, wonderful family pets. Keep your options open.

Re: I'll try again...can Brittanys be trusted w/pet birds?
I don't own birds, but my sister does. She has a Golden Retriever and a Plott Hound mix (big dogs). She lets her birds out to fly around the family room, but has to watch her dogs (and she has worked with them). The Plott Hound mix got one of the birds once when it landed on the floor, but fortunate...

Re: Sammy is in rare form today
Had to laugh when I read this thread. My Beagle/Brittany mix ate my salad today (just a plain old green salad with a small bit of cheese mixed in). It was my fault -- I set it down on the end table and walked out of the room. I just never thought a salad would draw her attention (she was sleeping on...

You might also try switching away from chicken/poultry. Maybe try something with duck.

I agree with Barb and Adele -- that was the first thing that I thought of also. I am still amazed that after just 2.5 months Pippa can be off leash and that she comes when called. Can I give you Cooper for a while?

Re: How do you exercise your brittany in the cold?
Training is mental exercise and that helps tire them out too. Another game we play is to hide small treats (smelly ones like Tricky Trainer Salmon or Duck bits) and then have the dogs find them. Of course, you have to put the dog in another room when you are hiding the treats, but mine love the game...
