We finally got out to our favorite Lake Moomaw for the day. With all the rain we've had this summer, the water level has been so high that it left the island we go to without much space for the dogs to run around. We were worried about how old Kayla (the swimming lunatic) would do this year since she's rather unsteady on her feet on uneven surfaces. We all piled into the boat and when we were about 50 yards from the island Kayla started getting really excited. We hooked her up to a long nylon lead (remember, she doesn't hear at all and vision is marginal) and lifted her over the side. She immediately headed for the water and started swimming. She doesn't have the same speed as she used to but she would have stayed out there all day if we'd let her! Here she was a few years ago, launching herself into the lake after a stick. It makes me sad to know those days are over but at least she can still swim and enjoy herself.

I have to admit that it's hard to look back too far and see where Kayla was just a few years ago. For a dog who was always incredibly athletic and energetic, it's difficult to watch her slow down. On the other hand, I'm just waiting for the day when that happens to Layla!!
