Peanut Butter

Post by Barb Wright »

This info from Terry Mixdorf, President of ABR.

ATTENTION: It has been brought to our attention that several brands of peanut butter, and other nut butters as well, are beginning to substitute sugar with a sweetener called XYLITOL.

Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs even in very small doses. Ingestion can cause rapid hypoglycemia (a dangerous drop in blood sugar level) and can cause extensive damage to liver cells, both conditions are potentially fatal.

PLEASE CHECK YOUR PEANUT BUTTER LABELS FOR XYLITOL. It is a good idea to check other processed food sources for Xylitol as well. If Xylitol is on the ingredients list be sure your dog does not consume the product.

WHEW! I've been having to stuff some of Kayla's pills (a story for another day) into peanut butter but I just buy the cheap store band and it says "sugar" so think we're OK!
