Thanks Barb....we're not giving up, he's being treated (antibiotics plus diuretics plus digitalis), and hope against hope will pull through....but it appears as though he's in heart and renal failure.

We're going to make him as comfortable as we can for as long as we can. He'll let us know when it's time.

I had no idea lyme could be this bad and hit so fast. I'm thinking about Hunter and I hope with age on his side he can pull through this. I think of all the times I've found ticks on my boy and thought nothing of it; just pulled them off.

Lyme usually isn't this bad; it's usually quite responsive to antibiotics, though there may be reoccurences down the line (which are also responsive to treatment).

However, Hunter has an extremely rare but extremely severe form, Lyme Nephritis, that attacks the kidneys and basically does irreversible damage.

He's not doing too well right now. Actually seems worse since taking him to the vet yesterday. He's now presenting more "classic" Lyme symptoms - slow movements, dragging of the feet, stiff joints.

We're spending as much time with him as we can and spoiling him. I just can't imagine how the girls are going to react when he goes.

My parents are already talking about getting another boy to take his place - I think they should wait. We can't afford it (especially after Hunter's vet bills), and we still have the two girls.

Hunter had a better day today.

He moved around more, even limbered up enough to chase our cat! He ate some, once we bought him wet, canned food (senior formula, so lower in protein, which, as a dog in renal failure, is crucial). In general, his eyes were clearer than yesterday. He seemed more lucid, more like his normal self.

He even put his head on my mom's leg to beg for food, which he hasn't done in a long time.

One hopes that he has more days like these as his days wind down.

Update:

Hunter hasn't done well the past few days. Barely coming out of his kennel, not eating, barely drinking.

The plan was to have him put down yesterday, but instead my parents took a chance and had him put on IV fluids, just to see if they could extend his life a little longer. I'm not sure how worthwhile that was...he just hasn't seemed happy or comfortable at all the last several days, and I'd rather he not suffer any more.

But, it's not my decision. He comes home from the hospital tonight, and we'll evaluate his condition and see where it takes us.

Some good news, though - the girls were tested, and they are free and clear of Lyme disease, so we got them vaccinated and they are now sporting tick collars. We're hoping that that, combined with our normal Frontline routine, will safeguard them in the future.

He's had a good couple of days....eating chicken and turkey, not very active, but not "zombie-like," as he was before we put him on fluids at the hospital.

We're just taking it one day at a time, watching for signs.
