Sudden Death in pups ?

Post by Dave »

Is Sudden Death Syndrome prevelant in Canines like it is in Humans ??

My friend sent home some of his pups to their new homes last Friday and one passed over the bridge Sunday . They had left him outdoors in a clean kennel for about 90 minutes and went to check on him and bring him in and he was dead :( . Dave

Oh, Dave, I don't have an answer, but I am so sorry.

:( :( Too sad :( Think I'd sure want an autopsy done. Just too many things that could be the reason. Sudden death should always be investigated, especially if there are other dogs in the pack.

When I picked up my dogs they had just got off the phone . Of course we wracked our brains to think of a cause . All the pups were/are healthy , vet checked , first shots given etc.The parents are healthy , and so forth .

They are having an autopsy done . It's just such a shock :( . I had met this little guy . These things happen .... :( Dave

I've seen a "sudden death syndrome" in kittens when I worked at a vet clinic, but only in very young kittens, about 3 to 4 weeks old, who had been taken from their mother way too soon. The vet tech called it "fading kitten syndrome". So I wouldn't think this would apply to an older puppy.

My heart bleeds for this family. It's just too sad when something so young and with so much life ahead of them is cut short.

The pup died from inhaling some mold from old hay . It can be toxic :( even in older dogs . Never use old hay for bedding in a kennel :!: . This was a hard lesson to learn .... :( Dave

A VERY hard lesson to learn. I didn't know this about moldy hay.

Oh how sad. I'll pass this on to my ranch friends who just got two blue heeler puppies. I know they spend a lot of time playing in the barn. I'm sorry but thanks for following up !!! Janet
