Oozing Sore

Post by Muddy Creek Britts »

Maggie has a sore on her head, just under her ear. It's about as wide as a pencil eraser. Tracy noticed it by the matted hair. The past couple days, Maggie has been whinier and clingier than usual. My gut feeling is that it may be where a tick was. We've done alot of hunting, and tick picking is constant. Not really sure if the two are related, but that is my hunch. Most injuries from tick bites, thorn damage, etc. just scab up. This one is oozing. Any ideas :?: Don't have any experience with hot spots. I just gobbed it up with Neosporin. Just wanted to see if this rings a bell to any of you.

Buckley had a spot about that size on his neck under his ear from an embedded tick. It didn't ooze though. My vet told me to bring Buckley in if any tick bite started to swell, ooze, form a large knot, etc. Maybe give your vet's office a call and talk to a tech. You may not have to bring her in but maybe they can help you decide on a time frame for improvement. If it's not healing in X days, we need to see her. If you can, I'd try to shave the hair down in that area so you can see the spot well and keep fur out of it.

I vote for a tick bite. My dogs don't get that reaction but my horses do. Just found one like that the other day on Curran.

Poor Maggie. I do not have enough experience with ticks to know what to tell you. Just wanted to send her my good wishes. Let us know that she is ok.

Not many ticks here, but hot spots usually grow larger pretty fast.

My dog recently had a tick bite in the same location and size exactly as you describe. He probably got it in NE Pennsylvania. I also put ointment on it and it is almost entirely healed.

This spring, my lab had a sore that size on his nose that oozed, and then the scab fell off, and left a little "crater" that took quite a while to heal.. The vet thought it was a tick bite that turned into an abscess.

The hair is finally starting to grow back a little around the scar. poor Smudgie. I felt like a failure as a dog mom....
