Help! Losing my gal.

Post by Puddin Man »

15 1/2 yo French Brit with history of heart murmur.

She is going into paroxysms of gasping for air. Vet says her right lung has "shut down" (or similar) and is making euthanasia noises.

We are trying prednisone but are only up to 20mg/day. Vet seems to discourage higher doses due to side effects but we've not had any in the past.

Higher dose of pred.? Other approach??

Thanks,
P

So so sorry to read this posting   15 1/2 is a good old age but it never makes this decision easier. In my experience, your dog will let you know when it's time, with a little guidance from your vet.

Oh P, so sorry to hear you are facing the hardest of all decisons we have to make for our dogs. Comfort issues really have to be decided by you and your vet, and hopefully you can find the right road to travel. Will keep you in my thoughts through this most difficult time.

Is she on any Lasix meds? Vetmedin? When our George was battling CHF, there came a point in time where his vet told us he was not suffering, but was in a bit of discomfort as he tried to get good breaths. We watched him closely, but soon enough we were all sitting on the ground watching him breathe, trying to decide what to do, and we realized if that was what we were doing, then it was time. You and she will be in my prayers, this is such a rough road. She is so lucky to have you walking it with her.

Neither.
Enalapril 10mg/day and prednisone, now up to 40mg/day.

I'm very nearly to that point, now.

Many thanks. This is plenty tough. Feel so helpless.

Best,

She had a really bad night.

The vet knew of nothing else to try.

She was suffering badly due to lack of oxygen.

We had to put her down this morn.

"The English language is entirely insufficient to tell you what a good, good dog she was."

Many thanks for various caring responses.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've lost two dogs this year, so I know the pain you're going through. It takes time, but it does get better.
