Sheppy Crossed the Rainbow Bridge

Post by janet909 »

It is with a broken, heavy heart that I'm letting this wonderful ABR community know that my Shep crossed the bridge this morning. Auntie Mom and her DH pulled him from a kill shelter in Nebraska in December 2009 and they met Kat half way between Omaha and Denver en route to western Colorado. He joined our family on New Years Day of 2010 at the age of 8. He was one of a kind. Easy to train, loyal, faithful and always nearby. He was our treasure and we cherished him. He learned to bird hunt, though he would rather hunt for butterflies while his brothers went after the birds, he went hawking with my DH who is a falconer, he loved to camp and backpack (he even had his very own bright red backpack) and he learned to surf on our many excursions with him to Mexico. Last August, he was diagnosed with renal failure. We treated it aggressively and we enjoyed 9 months of what I considered borrowed time. We made one last camping trip to Mexico and took him on daily hikes in the desert. Even though he was a senior, he was the first of the three that would "chum" us every morning for his "W" as we called it. This morning, after a long night of what we interpreted as discomfort, we made the hardest decision in the world and helped him on his next journey at the age of 13 yrs and 5 months. While we had 9 months to prepare (unlike so many others who suddenly lose their fur babies) it is still utterly devastating. He was truly happy and playful until the final 24 hours. We promised not to let him suffer but it was the hardest decision ever. While we love all our babies, there was just something magical about Sheppy Shu. I am so thankful that our paths crossed. I wish I could have had him as a puppy as he was so loyal and loving but I will cherish the 5 1/2 years together that we did have.

My deepest sympathies on the loss of Shep. What a blessing he was to you, and also you to him. I know nothing I can say can ease the pain of losing such a wonderful companion, but take comfort in knowing he is free of pain - a final gift that you so lovingly gave to Shep. Hug his brothers, they miss him too.

Ah, so sorry to hear that news. You've shared some wonderful stories about your "boys" and so it feels like I knew them....losing Shep will be hard to get past, I know. You are fortunate to have the others to help cover the loss and to remind you of the good times past. Hugs to all of you....my heart feels for you.

I am really sorry to hear this news. Although not totally unexpected, I know how hard those decisions are to make. I, too, loved hearing all the stories about your boys and felt like I knew them well. So this is definitely a loss felt by many of us. I know there's really nothing I can say or do except hug my girls a little closer and appreciate every day with them. Again, my sympathies

My heart is aching for you, Janet, and for all of us who loved Shep. He was truly a special guy.

We were so lucky to see him once a year after his rescue at the ABR Rocky Mountain picnics. He was absolutely devoted to Janet and her husband.

I remember meeting him at the shelter and being shocked that anyone could give up such a handsome and well mannered Brittany. He was definitely on his best behavior that night. I have shared with Janet that in saying yes to pulling Shep from the shelter, DH and I were opened up to a great gift. About six weeks later, the same shelter called us about a little three month old blind Brittany puppy who was left in a drop box "safe drop" at the shelter. And CharLee has been in our lives for over five years now. She is our little sunshine girl. Good journey, Shep. Thank you for putting us on the path that led to her.

Thank you everyone. The days slowly get easier. He will always be missed though. We have made a very special place for him in the garden. I walk by it everyday and think of all the wonderful times we had together. I never would have had the shear pleasure of being his "mom" had I not seen his video on this message board. I am so very thankful.
